Understanding Breast Density

All breasts contain a mix of fatty and dense tissue, which is a common finding on mammograms. Dense tissue can make it harder to see small changes on a mammogram. Knowing your breast density helps guide your care for future mammograms.

Why this matters
If your mammogram shows dense breast tissue, additional imaging like a screening breast ultrasound, may be recommended with your annual mammogram to improve breast cancer detection.

Where to find your density category
You can find your breast density category included in your mammogram results under “Mammogram Findings” and is listed as an ACR BIRADS density category (A-D).

A 3D mammogram (also called digital breast tomosynthesis) provides our radiologists with a series of detailed images of the breast. This type of mammogram is an X-ray that allows them to better evaluate breast tissue layer by layer, making fine details more visible and no longer hidden by overlapping tissue. This advanced form of medical imaging is crucial for breast cancer screening and early detection of breast cancer, particularly in women with dense breast tissue.

The process of a Genius™ 3D mammography exam is the same as a conventional 2D exam. The technologist will position you, gently compress your breast, and take images from different angles. There’s no additional compression required for 3D imaging.

The technologist will review the images at the workstation to ensure high-quality images have been captured. A radiologist will then examine the images and report mammogram results to either your physician or directly to you, depending on your provider’s preference.

As of January 1, 2019, 3D screening mammograms are covered by Medicare and private insurers in the state of Connecticut and are not subject to copays. A screening mammogram is considered a preventive exam and is typically covered once per year.

A diagnostic mammogram may be applied toward your deductible, depending on your insurance plan and clinical indication.

The Genius™ 3D exam has been clinically proven to reduce the chance of callbacks, which are more common in women with dense breasts. It is the only FDA-approved 3D mammography system shown to improve cancer detection while reducing false positives in dense breast tissue.

Depending on your results, additional imaging such as breast ultrasound or breast MRI may be recommended for further evaluation.

Based on your clinical history and your referring physician’s order, you may need a diagnostic mammogram. This type of mammogram requires more detailed images from different angles that allow the radiologist to check the area more closely. A diagnostic mammogram is applied toward the patient’s deductible.

- - Breast Ultrasound: This non-invasive exam provides a better view of the breast, cysts, or masses so your radiologist can provide a more accurate diagnosis.
  - Breast MRI: This exam provides more information after an abnormal mammogram. It’s considered more invasive since contrast material is given through an IV before the procedure.
  - Breast Biopsy: This procedure takes cells/tissue samples with abnormal findings from the area.

A benign breast condition: A mass that is not cancerous, such as a lump, cyst, or nipple discharge.
Calcifications: Small, bright white spots of calcium that can appear on about half of all mammograms of women ages 50 and older (and on about 1 in 10 mammograms of younger women).
Non-invasive breast cancers: Such as Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) where abnormal cells grow in the milk ducts.
Invasive breast cancer: Abnormal cells inside the milk ducts or lobules spread out into nearby breast tissue. When the abnormal cells spread to other parts of the body, it is called metastatic cancer, also known as stage IV or advanced breast cancer.

Additional Information

At our women’s imaging center, we provide screening mammography starting at age 40 and diagnostic breast imaging when medically indicated. We are experienced in imaging patients with breast implants and tailored imaging needs.

We understand that patients often have questions about radiation exposure from mammograms, and we want to reassure you that the dose is very low and carefully monitored to ensure patient safety. While mammograms provide critical information, additional imaging may occasionally be required to confirm or clarify findings and ensure the most accurate diagnosis possible.
