What these screenings look for—and how they help guide earlier, more informed care

Not all health conditions start with noticeable symptoms.

That’s what makes preventative screenings so important—they provide insight into your health before something feels wrong. During Cancer Control Month, it’s an opportunity to better understand how these screenings support and influence not just outcomes, but the options available for your care.

Understanding what these screenings evaluate and when they may be recommended can help you make more informed decisions alongside your provider.

Preventative Screenings

Lung Screening: What It Can Detect Early

Lung cancer often develops without symptoms, which is why screening is so important—especially for those at higher risk.

A low-dose CT lung screening is a 30-minute, non-invasive exam used to detect lung cancer at its earliest and most treatable stage, when symptoms may not be felt. According to the Mount Sinai Health System, over 80% of lung cancers are curable when found early. Click here to use our pack/year calculator to better understand your smoking history and whether screening may be appropriate for you.

You may benefit from a lung screening if you:

  • Are between 50 and 80 years old and healthy enough to undergo treatment
  • Have a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years (one pack a day for 20 years, two packs a day for 10 years, or half a pack a day for 40 years)
  • Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years
  • Have a family history of lung cancer
  • Do not have current symptoms or a history of cancer in the last 5 years

Mammograms: Comparing Breast Health Year Over Year

One of the most valuable aspects of annual Breast cancer screening is the ability to track changes over time.

An annual 3D screening mammogram, recommended at age 40, allows radiologists to evaluate and compare your images year over year, helping to detect even the most subtle differences that may not be felt.

What this means for you:

  • Earlier visibility into changes in breast tissue
  • Advanced 3D imaging that improves detection and reduces callbacks
  • Annual screening prevention coverage in many cases (though insurance coverages may vary)
  • A clearer understanding of your dense breast tissue category and whether additional imaging is recommended

Consistent screenings build a more complete picture of your breast health and lead to more informed recommendations over time.

Understanding Bone Health With a Bone Density Screening

Bone health often isn’t something you think about until it affects your daily life.

A bone density (DEXA) scan is a quick, non-invasive exam that measures bone strength and helps identify early signs of bone loss, including osteoporosis and osteopenia.

You may benefit from a bone density (DEXA) scan based on a combination of age, gender, and risk factors, including:

  • Low calcium intake
  • Low body weight
  • Height loss greater than 1 inch
  • Long-term steroid use
  • Rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Postmenopausal status in women
  • Hypogonadism in men

Screening may also be recommended based on age or other clinical considerations.

Understanding your bone health earlier gives you and your provider the opportunity to take steps that support long-term strength and mobility.

Calcium Scoring: Identifying Early Signs of Heart Disease

Heart disease risk isn’t always obvious, especially in its early stages.

A calcium scoring CT scan is a quick, non-invasive exam that measures calcified plaque in your coronary arteries. This information helps assess your risk of heart disease and provides important context for conversations with your provider.

You may benefit from this scan if you have:

  • High stress levels
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • History of smoking

Understanding your baseline risk can help guide more informed decisions about your lifestyle and long-term heart health.

A Clearer View of Your Health Starts With a Screening
