Ultrasound: What to Expect
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Is A Thyroid Ultrasound Exam Performed?
Thyroid ultrasounds are commonly used to detect and diagnose thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer, or to determine the cause of an improperly functioning thyroid gland. This imaging method helps in evaluating the size, shape, and structure of the thyroid and surrounding tissues. It is also useful in assessing thyroid disease and abnormalities in the parathyroid gland.
What Will Happen During The Thyroid Ultrasound Exam?
The ultrasound technician (sonographer) will request that you lay on the exam bed on your back. Your head will be tilted back on a pillow to elongate the neck. Warm, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied on the skin and/or the transducer, which is a small, hand-held device that sends and receives sound waves. The sonographer will move the transducer on the skin as necessary to obtain ultrasound images of the thyroid gland and surrounding tissues for the physician to interpret. Ultrasound is a painless imaging test that provides real-time images.
How Should I Prepare For A Thyroid Ultrasound?
There is no preparation for this exam.
What Are The Benefits And Risks Of A Thyroid Ultrasound?
The benefits of Thyroid Ultrasound:
- Ultrasound images can be shown in real-time.
- Ultrasound scanning gives a clear picture of soft tissues that do not show up well on X-ray images.
- No ionizing radiation is used for this procedure, making it safe for patients of all ages.
Risks you should be aware of:
- There are no known risks for ultrasound.
Additional Information
A thyroid ultrasound is often part of a broader diagnostic approach that may include a physical exam and thyroid function tests to assess the overall health of the thyroid. This imaging method is especially helpful in visualizing blood vessels around the thyroid and identifying any potential issues. If a nodule or other abnormality is detected, further evaluation may be necessary to determine the presence of thyroid cancer or other conditions. Regular monitoring of thyroid nodules and other abnormalities is crucial for managing thyroid disease effectively.
Keep in mind that this information is general. Your radiologist is the best source of information about how these risks and benefits may apply to you.
