- Liver
- Kidneys
- Spleen
- Bowel
- Pancreas
- Adrenal glands
- Pelvic organs
An MRI is also performed to diagnose:

- Causes of pelvic pain in women, such as fibroids and endometriosis
What Can I Expect To Happen During The MRI Of The Abdomen/Pelvis Exam?
You will be positioned on the moveable scanning table. Straps may be used to help you stay in the correct position during the exam.
If you are receiving contrast agent for your exam, the MRI technologist will insert an IV line into a vein in your hand or arm where the contrast will be injected. Contrast agent is used to enhance the image quality.
The table will slide into the MRI machine. The MRI machine is large and is open at both ends. The technologist will leave the room during your exam, but you will be able to see and hear them in the control room. They will check in with you during your exam to make sure you are comfortable and do not need anything.
How Should I Prepare For An MRI Of The Abdomen/Pelvis?
-
-
- Please inform the technologist if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
- You will be asked to wear a gown during the exam. You will be asked to remove undergarments that have any metal zippers or fasteners.
- Guidelines about eating and drinking before an MRI exam vary. Follow your daily routine unless told otherwise.
- You will be asked if you have any known allergies to contrast.
- Please let the technologist know if you have any serious health problems. You cannot be given contrast if you have certain health conditions, such as kidney disease.
- Jewelry and other metal objects cannot be worn during the exam. Please try to leave them at home if possible.
- You should tell the technologist if you have any metal implants or anything metal in your body. These may interfere with the exam or be dangerous to have an MRI because of the strong magnetic field of the MRI magnet.

Additional Information
An MRI of the abdomen provides detailed images of internal body structures such as the bile duct and other soft tissues. The use of radio waves and a strong magnetic field in MRI scans makes them sensitive to movement, so you will be asked to remain still. If oral contrast is used, you will need to follow specific instructions hours prior to the exam. The MRI images help in evaluating internal organs and diagnosing various medical conditions effectively.
